MARKETING OF MILK

• Marketing of milk in Malawi is both formal and informal. Some farmers sell their milk through vending which is not recommended.
• Dairy farmers are encouraged to be in Bulking Groups where there is cooling center with functional facilities. The milk is tested and cooled at the centre. The milk is sold to the processor who pays on monthly basis. Members for a bulking group are supposed to come from within eight kilometers radius from the cooling center. By bulking the milk, farmers are able to sell the milk to a processor; they also bargain as a group and can buy inputs in bulk at a reduced price.
