PLANTING
PLANTING
There are basically two methods presently available for propagating baobab; direct sowing and planting on nursery
Nursery Management
Considerations to be taken into account when selecting a site for the nursery, the land should ideally:
- Be level, with good drainage. If land having these features is not available then level the land
- Be close to a good water supply
- Be in a relatively sheltered area, with protection from strong winds
- Be safe from potential flooding
- Have no previous history of pest outbreaks and should not be close to bushes
- Be protected from stray or domestic animals
Nursery Sowing
- Seed should be placed in hot water for 30 minutes
- File down or nick the outer seed coat using a rough surface like a stone, knife or nail cutter
- Plant the seed the same day
- Plant one or two seeds in each pot to a depth of 1–2 cm
- Water once in the evening
- The seeds germinates after two weeks hence start watering twice a day (morning and evening) but if the weather is too hot, water once in the evening
- Water for three months before transplanting.
