POST HARVESTING HANDLING
- Harvest well dried baobab fruits and store them in a nkhokwe / storage house
- Construct nkhokwe 0.5 meters from the ground and fence it to a height not less than 1 meter from the ground
- The walls should have gaps for air circulation
- Put the Baobab fruit on the floor and should not exceed 0.6 m height
- The nkhokwe should be a good distance from toilet, animal house and the kitchen
- It should be very strong so that it can be used for more years
- It should be sited on wind ward direction
- Should be sited on land with a slight slope to enable some effective drainage
- It should have a door to keep livestock away
- You should not apply any pesticides to the khola or the fruits
Breaking Baobab Shell
- Make sure the premises are not contaminated with any chemicals. If it’s a house refer to its history of chemical use
- The Environment surrounding the house should be clean(litter free)
- There should be a fence surrounding the house to prevent livestock
- Its windows should be covered with nets.
Before breaking the fruit gather the following tools:
1. Panga knife
2. Clean mat preferably new.
3. A clean sack preferably new
4. A bucket with water
5. A plunk where baobab fruit should be resting before breaking
6. Protective clothing and mask
7. A plastic paper of more than one meter to be put on your legs during operation.
