FEEDS AND FEEDING INDIGENOUS CHICKENS
- Indigenous chickens are left on free range to fetch for their feed
- Supplement the chickens at least in the morning and evening with some supplementary feeds like bran, maize and kitchen left overs.
- Feed them with crushed egg shells as a source of calcium supplement that they lay eggs with strong egg shells.
- Make a simple supplement feed ration as follows:
Mix two parts of maize meal or bran, one part of roasted soya meal and a bit of salt
- Practice basket feeding of chicks for them to have adequate feed that they grow fast and to be protected from predators
- Provide adequate clean drinking water
- Consult the nearest residential Assistant Veterinary Officer for more details on feeding
To maintain health chickens observe the following:
- Maintain proper feeding
- Vaccinate chickens against Newcastle disease with Lasota or I2 vaccine on 3–4 months intervals
- Do not vaccinate sick chickens
- Deworm chickens onset of rain season (December) and offset of rain season (March)
- Burn or bury all dead chickens to prevent spread of diseases
