- Select chickens with fast growth rate, big body size, high hatchability, good mothering ability
Cross breeding
Indigenous hens can be cross bred with Mikolongwe (Black Austrolorp) cocks to take advantages of:
- Fast growth
- Higher egg production
- Higher meat production
Let one cock serve ten hens
Egg selection for hatching
- Observe that eggs selected for hatching are not older than 10 days so that a hen sits on fresh eggs
- Select eggs without deformations
- Select eggs of good size
- Keep eggs in well dry and cool place, hygienic place without bad smell that eggs don’t pick the smell
- Observe that eggs select for setting for hatching are not kept for more than 10 days
- Record date on which eggs are laid to know which eggs are older
- Remove all eggs older than 10 days that a hen sits on fresh eggs
