HARVESTING

HARVESTING

  • Harvest soya when it has matured usually after 100 to 140 days after planting, number of days may depend on variety

  • Harvest when a good percentage of soya has matured

  • Matured soya makes sound when shaken.

  • Harvest in the morning hours when temperatures are low to prevent shattering

  • Do not harvest on a rainy day to avoid drying problems which can cause losses

  • Cut the plant at the base using a sickle so that roots are left in the soil, the roots of soybeans have nodules of nitrogen fixing bacteria which may help establish a colony of these bacteria in your soil to aid future planting

  • Safely transport soya home.

  • Thresh manually or mechanically when the plants are properly dry and as soon as possible

  • Beat gently with small sticks to avoid destroying the seeds

  • Depending on varieties, you may harvest 16 to 20 bags (50kg) of soya per acre
