PLANTING

PLANTING

  • Plant with first rains

  • Early planting ensure that the plant matures while there is still moisture in the soil

  • Recommended seedrate translates to recommended yield

  • The double rows should be 20cm apart on the flat topped ridge.

  • Plant 1 seed at 15cm apart for virginia type (creeping), and 1 seed at 10 cm for bunch type (standing). Groundnuts can also be planted on flat using the same spacing.

Creeping variety

Standing variety

  • Fill gaps the first week after planting

  • Seed rate is 32 – 40kg /acre for CG7, Nsinjiro and Chalimbana

  • Seed rate is 20 -24kg /acre for Kakoma, Chitala and Baka

  • Well spaced plants provide good ground cover and prevents weed from growing and minimises diseases.
