MANURE APPLICATION

Farmers are encouraged to use manure especially whenever possible. Manure improves soil structure as well as supplying nutrients to plants.

Apply manure not less than a month before planting maize and the recommended rate is 5 tons per acre or 12.5 tons per hectare. As a guide this can be achieved by using a 20 litre tin of manure applied every 8 metres (8 steps) along the furrow. Where manure is not adequate apply 2 handfuls per planting station and mix with soil before planting. You can make compost manure from household decomposable refuse, animal manure and crop residues. You may use the tools shown in the picture below.
