FERTILIZER APPLICATION

• Farmers are encouraged to use both organic and inorganic fertilizers
• In the case of manure, farmers can apply 16 MT per hectare
• Under SRI, apply 120 kg 23:10:5+6S+1.0Zn and 43 kg Urea per hectare.

Faya and other cultivars

Apply 100 kg 23:10:5+6S+ 1.0Zn, 20 days after seedling emergence and 50 kg Urea at 60 days after seedling emergence for Faya, Kilombero and other cultivars to achieve 60 kg nitrogen and 25 kg Phosphate per hectare.

Senga and other varieties

• Senga, Changu, Nunkile (Pusa 33), Mtupatupa and Vyawo, requires an application of 80 kg nitrogen and 25 Kg Phosphate per hectare
• Apply 100 kg of 23:10:5+6S+ 1.0Zn and 5 Kg Urea at the time of transplanting
• Each fertilizer is applied separately to achieve good distribution in the field
• This is followed by an application of 100kg of Urea per hectare at 40 days after transplanting for all varieties except Nunkile which should be top dressed at 25 days after seedling emergence.
